One of the pioneering modern art museums in Spain
Eivissa Contemporary Art Museum (MACE) was opened in 1969 promoted by Eivissa City Council and encouraged by the Eivissa Biennial which had been held for the first time in 1964. Therefore it is one of the oldest contemporary art museums in Spain.
Up until recently, the museum had always been housed in the Simón Poulet building(1727). The MACE has in its collections –always closely committed to avant garde work- pieces from different origins, among them works that won award as at the Eivissa Biennial and at Ibizagráfic and the collections of engravings donated by Carl van der Voort. Among the artists represented are: Will Faber, Eduard Micus, Erwin Broner, ‘Portmany’, Erwin Bechtold, Gilbert Herreyns, Frank El Punto, Antoni Hormigo, Rafael Tur Costa, Tàpies, Equipo Crónica, Millares…
After extensive renovation works, the museum reopened in 2012 with a new glass building in the old gardens, which grows inwards in the land. It has new rooms for temporary exhibitions. The works revealed a group of Punic dwellings from the 4th century BC which have been incorporated into the annexed space via a transparent floor.
